Throughout France, more than 500,000 hectares of land were mined during World War II. On the orders of Field Marshal Rommel, nearly 6 million mines were laid as part of the Atlantic Wall alone to protect French beaches from invasion. The Normandy coasts were therefore severely impacted by this “mine warfare“.
At the Liberation came the time for reconstruction... and mine clearance! In sOctober 1944, the French authorities decided to use German prisoners to clear the many minefields that paralyzed the country. Both a punishment and a means of redemption, according to the Allies, but this dangerous work would never seem to end.
