For the general population, the D-Day Landings are often associated with unforgettable scenes from films such as The Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan.
Yet they are frequently oblivious to the fact that, behind this spectacular military feat, there was also one of the most audacious logistic undertakings in History into which Michel Chevalet offers us a fascinating insight: the construction of 2 artificial harbours. Just like a 500-piece, 1/2 a million-tonne meccano set, its various elements were shipped over from England and reassembled in just 8 days to land some 200,000 vehicles and 2 million men. Without Omaha and, more specifically, Arromanches, the Allied landings may well have failed to accomplish their utimate aim.
