6th June 1944 a few minutes after midnight, silent fi gures glided through the clouds and swerved above the Orne, to the north of Caen. They touched ground at over 95mph to fi nally come to a halt just a few yards from Bénouville bridge that would later enter legend under the name of Pegasus Bridge. Ninety-nine men struggled their way out of their gliders and, in just a few minutes, captured the structure thanks to a spectacular surprise attack. They were the vanguard of the 6th Airborne Division that would jump between the Rivers Orne and Dives a few minutes later, to open the east fl ank of the Normandy Landing operation. The missions they were entrusted with were all successfully accomplished despite largely dispersed drops. Hence began three long months of combat for the British parachutists.
